Gaming Podcast 169: The Zerg Rush

This week we’re busting out the Gaming Podcast love with some gaming news, community comments and we’re flashing back to Tag Team M.U.S.C.L.E for the NES and looking through the history of Greg Costikyan. For those interested in Herr Alien’s link, here is the article about Modern Warfars woes. Also, the Will It Blend iPad video. This weeks gaming news:

  • Move will appeal to the hardcore gamers as well
  • Starcraft II gets AO raiding in Korea
  • Not looking good for Activision‘s lawsuit
  • Nolan Bushnell returns to Atari

Thanks for all the feedback and answers to the questions last week. This weeks, we’re asking a tough question… what game exists in the market today that rivals the overall play time seen by games like Minesweeper and Solitaire?

  1. Yeah my opinion on the ipad was exaggerated, the mobile gaming market isn’t something I really buy into (sadly if I trying play games or read while travelling in a vehicle, I kind of feel ill). I can’t have a true opinion on the ipad cuz I haven’t ever owned or used one. But I know I don’t like iTunes, I know I’m a console game & PC gamer (MMO’s). As for work and study I need to use GIS/CAD apps which need raw performance, multiply screens & a compatible OS. So basically the ipad or tablet PC doesn’t appeal to me much. Although it would be humorous to blend an Ipad, I’m sure it appeals to a large amount of people.

    Thought on IW
    I thing this is a shame IW are a good development team with the success of their last game, it was said they made 500mil+ on 1st day of sale those figures are amazing. It would be good to find out y?

    As for the QOTW
    Nothing lol those games get played by ppl would consider themselves as non-gamers.

  3. @Move and hardcore players:
    Ooooh yeeeah baby!! Bring it!! I am sooo hardcore now that I can shoot the AK47 in Modern Warvare by waving my … magic wand?!

    As for sport games being hardcore, remember my hand grenade based baseball game?

    @Starcraft II gets AO RATING in Korea
    Well, they’re the only country with recorded cases of Starcraft gamers dead because of, well, starving themselves while playing the game.

    😀 Don, keep cursing, it’s always funny hearing Derrick mentioning the times afterwards 🙂

    @Activision issue:
    The countersuit from Activision is funny:

    “Activision’s countersuit against the band claimed it is ‘publicly known’ that characters in previous Guitar Hero games have been ‘unlockable’ in the same fashion, suggesting No Doubt did not exercise due diligence before entering into the agreement. ”

    Basically, hey, although our CONTRACT was to USE YOUR IMAGE for ONLY THREE SONGS to be played by your avatar, it’s your fault we don’t patch the game … ?!

    What if … what if Activision realized that this unlocking of characters is an ‘unofficial’ feature that helps selling the game?

    @iPad: I guess the reason is that I don’t see the use for it.
    Seriously.
    My girlfriend will get an iPhone, her sister has an iPad touch. I am not compelled to use any of them. I did toy with the iPod for 10 – 15 minutes but it didn’t click for me …
    And it’s not just the iPhone/iPod/iPad, I just don’t feel the urge to buy a very smart, general purpose, portable, pocket size thing.
    I like my gadgets to be rugged and specialized.

    @Question of the week:
    None. Because there are soooo many secretaries/developers/testers/whatever-professional-that-uses-a-computer that play Solitaire …
    As for close contenders, I see Starcraft.
